This weekend, Virtuosi Concerts presents their latest mentorship concert program.

In its second year, "Roots and Branches" pairs established artists with budding performers, providing them the opportunity to learn, collaborate and grow in a nurturing, professional environment.

“What we have been doing this week has been intensive work,” says mentee Patricia Vanuci.

Originally from Sao Paolo, Brazil, Vanuci is completing her Masters studies in cello performances at the Desautels Faculty of Music (a follow-up to her first Masters from the University of Southern Mississippi) and appreciates the glimpse at professional working life.

Choosing repertoire, collaborating with new colleagues, rehearsing efficiently and sharing musical ideas are just some of the skills honed through the mentorship.

“It's really given me a very good idea about what I’m going to meet in my future,” she says.

Vanuci joins fellow mentee, soprano Camryn Dewar alongside mentors Kerry DuWors (violin) and Everett Hopfner (piano).

Having the young artists get a full understanding of how the “sausage gets made” (logistics, programming, and artistic choices) was important to the mentors, says Hopfner.

“It’s really important that (Dewar and Vanuci) have this experience not just to perform ... but to really actively contribute to what the final product will look like.”

In a program that reflects personal identity and cultural connection, Dewar has selected works closely associated with her Métis roots and Vanuci has brought a bit of Brazil to the prairies.

The concert takes place on Sunday, January 14 at St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
