Expect a sentimental and suave afternoon of music at the Rady JCC on Thursday as Music ‘N’ Mavens pays tribute to a legendary saloon singer.
Featuring Aaron Hutton alongside pianist Danny Carroll, A Tribute to Tony Bennett honours the great crooner who died in July of 2023.
In a career that spanned seven decades, Bennett’s smooth vibrato paired with his comfortable and confident delivery earned him 20 Grammy Awards, two Primetime Emmys, and over 50 million records sold.
“When I was starting to program this concert, I had to do a lot of listening,” says Hutton.
More familiar with ratpack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., the opportunity to explore the vast catalogue of tunes sung by Bennett was an inspiring one.
“No time had passed before I had too many songs to choose from,” notes Hutton. "I had to scale it back... (as) it’s only an hour-long concert.”
A versatile, award-winning, classically trained singer, Hutton is a sought-after vocalist who has established himself in both the Musical Theatre and Classical communities across the prairies.
Upon learning that Bennett kept up his vocal chops by singing Bel Canto tunes, Hutton found a common thread in their approach to singing.
“That’s actually sort of how I connect with him and his style,” explains Hutton. “You can hear it when he’s singing.”
In his third engagement with Music ‘N’ Mavens, Hutton relishes the opportunity to perform alongside – and learn from – pianist Danny Carroll.
“I’m really, really lucky to be collaborating on this concert with Danny,” says Hutton. “I get to stay true to who I am in my voice but singing this type of music is completely different and just totally liberating.”
The concert takes place on Thursday, March 21 in the Berney Theatre at the Rady JCC.
