Barre meets bar in a special event this week.
Back for the fifth time, the annual dance pop-up curated and choreographed by Stephan Azulay returns to the Beer Can.
Starting as a safely distanced, outdoor gathering during the first summer of COVID and the restrictions then imposed, the event has blossomed into an annual showcase on the outdoor stage.
“We just kept on doing it,” says Azulay, a (recently promoted) principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. “It’s always fun.”
Working with various musicians and dancers, this year’s pop-up features fellow RWB Company member Jaimi Deleau alongside cellist Rob Knaggs and drummer Kyle Kunkel.
“For me... the most important thing about (the pop-up) is that we’re bringing dance to a non-traditional space,” says Azulay.
Working within the limitations of the space is a welcome challenge for Azulay, who points to the floor, sound and height of the stage covering as factors.
“I’m happy to (work around those aspects) because it’s super important to make dance more accessible,” he explains.
Dance Pop-Up @ The Beer Can takes place on Thursday, June 13 at 1 Granite Way – adjacent to the Granite Curling Club.
Tickets are $25, available through Eventbrite.
