The cattle industry is taking a page out of science fiction with the government of Canada investing just over 1 and a half million dollars to help improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle. In a release,
"Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced up to $1,627,270 to the Canadian Angus Association (CAA), through the AgriScience Program – Projects Component, to help improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle."
Genetic selection tools give producers the chance to better their profitability and accurately predicting traits that benefit the environment and consumers.
Using tools like AI, machine learning, camera and computer vision systems to collect a very large amount of data to on traits that could impact a producers bottom line, animal health and welfare and environmental impact and sustainability.
With this knowledge will support the development of new systems adn technologies to further advance breeding tools, and help secure Canada's position as a well renowned country for genetics withing the global cattle industry.
