There were many great things about this year’s Manitoba Stampede and Exhibition in Morris, however, the Gathering of Nations performances were a highlight of the weekend.

A member of the Gathering of Nations committee, Chantal Seenie, was thrilled with the turnout and support for the dancers and singers throughout the weekend. She says the event is particularly special because the area of the event is unique.

“I hold the communities here close to my heart, I'm glad that I get to bring them together in the way that I do. I think it's important that we share our culture with the surrounding communities. We were very excited about the event.”

Seenie adds that there's a lot of work that goes into setting up the Gathering of Nations at such a large event. They have added two teepees to the site of the dancing to add to the education people can gain from traditional teachings, storytelling, and celebrating artistic and cultural talent. These teachings include amazing activities like beading, dancing, wildlife tanning, leather working and more.

“A lot of planning goes into just trying to get in touch with dancers and singers ahead of time. Also, the work for trying to get funding into place like applying for grants and bursaries to help make the event a success.”

There was great support from the community and surrounding areas for the different Gathering of Nations performances, many people were also able to be included in various dances. Seenie says she hopes that this support can carry through to their powwow in mid-August. She comments it was great to see everyone at the event and she can’t wait to see even more people next year.
