When a small business is still going strong after 30 years, you can bet it has at least three things going for it: quality inventory, valued employees and the support of the community. Call it a hat trick for Milano for Men!
“People who’ve never been in the store, are new to the community or may be from a larger city are often surprised to see such a beautiful menswear store in Grande Prairie,” says Rob McConkey, owner of Milano for Men.
Located at 10030, 100 Ave in Grande Prairie, AB, Milano for Men prides itself on being northern Alberta’s premium retailer for high-end menswear, providing casual and formal attire for men and boys, as well as an impressive selection of accessories and footwear.
Designer labels include the likes of Bugatti, Boss, Armani Exchange, Ecco, Masutto and Lacoste, and the store also offers full tailoring services.
“We kind of do a bit of everything in here, which is very unique,” McConkey explains. “We have designer brands and everything from suits to footwear and denim to outerwear. There’s even some kids’ stuff.”
The menswear store also offers suit rentals for everything from graduation and weddings to hockey season.
The employees are central to Milano for Men’s success. Paula, the store’s manager, has worked there for five years, and Kaidy, Kalum, Aiden, Caleb and Bella complete an exceptional team. “I’m proud of the story I’ve been able to build over all these years, and a big part of it has been the staff I’ve had.”
It’s a story that began in 1994, when McConkey purchased the former Brown Brothers Menswear. He’d already worked in and managed the store, and given his interest in men’s fashion it seemed to make sense that he’d build a career out of it. “This year will be 30 years,” he reflects. “We get supported so well by the community. There are so many opportunities in Grande Prairie.”
