After taking a break for a couple of years, the Concerts in the Park returned to the Island this summer with outstanding support from the community.
One of the organizers and artists performing, John Dietrich, says he was pleased with the turnout for the final concert. There were four concerts held throughout the summer which attracted crowds to Island Park.
“Many different people that come out here, from kids to senior citizens and everyone in between. Our music here is a mixture of everything to make sure there is something for everybody.”
Opening at the final performance was $2 Bill and His Bad Pennies, followed by Tom and Lori. Then finally Johnny Dietrich and Kickin’ Up Dust closed the night which he says has become a tradition with the last concert.
“This was the final one for this summer, but we'll be doing the concerts again next year. Many opportunities come up after the summer as well. I, along with Kickin’ Up Dust, usually do concerts at the Herman Prior with Northern Reflections and the Sharpe Sisters. However, the summer always has highlights for us.”
The MMF Portage Local Culture & Heritage Committee was there hosting their barbeque for the last show. They had cheeseburgers, hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks, and chips for the whole family. Dietrich comments that they were a great help over the summer, and it's always a nice night on the Island.
“The park is a good place to sit and enjoy the music. The last time we did our final concert there were over 600 people here. It’s just nice to enjoy the barbeque and music at such a nice spot.”
Many other local artists performed throughout the summer. Some of these entertainers include Paul Shepherd, the Sharpe Sisters, Ed Goertzen, Helen White, Mason Palendat, Nelson Little, and many more. Organizers are excited to see everyone back in the park for more concerts next summer.
