This Sunday, September 8th at 7pm, Jazz Winnipeg will be kicking off another great season of Sunday night Jazz at the Fort Garry Hotel. Some of the country’s best musicians will be taking to the stage to bring Winnipeg audiences the absolute finest in live music.
The first concert of the season features former Winnipegger and guitarist Aaron Shorr.
Aaron has been an active member of Winnipeg’s jazz community for nearly a decade. He has studied at Humber College in Toronto, the University of Manitoba, and privately with international jazz icons like Jonathan Kreisberg, Miles Okazaki, and Bruce Forman.
He is just coming off his 2023 debut album called Omand's Creek, that features reimagined standards, pop tunes, and original music, performed alongside Julian Bradford on Bass and Kevin Waters on drums.
The line-up of musicians for the Sunday night performance will be the same as for his recording. Julian Bradford and Kevin Waters are two musicians that Shorr loves playing with. “We just get along great. I like to play with people who we just have a great rapport with. We really like to hang out together, we share a very similar sense of humor. It is not just about the music, it’s about how we get along as human beings,” says Shorr.
Joining the line up for Sunday’s performance will be Winnipeg pianist Carter Graham. Graham is another musician that Shorr plays regularly with. Shorr performs alongside Graham in the group Vox Populi, amongst other ensembles. For Sunday's gig the additon of Graham adds a new host of possibilities. As Shorr explains, “For this gig I’m playing some new tunes that haven’t played before, and some tunes I’ve always wanted to play. I though the quartet would be a fun format to do that with.”
Shorr is a remarkable guitarist and the comradery and supreme musicianship of these four players is going to make for a great evening of jazz. Shorr will be performing some original compositions, some modified pop tunes, and some jazz standards, with the quartet adding their own personal feel and sound to each tune.
This is a fantastic way to start out the 2024-25 Sunday night jazz series at the Fort Gary Hotel!
