During a recent city council meeting, it was a unanimous decision to approve funding of $150,000 as part of an expenditure to the 2024 Operating Budget.

The funds for the budget are part of the upcoming Chestermere Charity Golf Classic on Thursday (Sept. 19).

Chief Administrative Officer, Kent Edney says the city has to collect money from tournament registrations and sponsorships along with paying money out to the golf course for promotional items.

The event will raise funds for the Municipality of Jasper for their wildfire recovery efforts and the Chestermere Public Library.

"Procedurally this should result in no net change dollar-wise to our budget, but we do need to have authorization to spend those monies on this item even though it's essentially a net-zero in and out," says Edney.

Mayor Shannon Dean reiterated that the city is not spending $150,000 on the golf tournament.

"This is so that we can have money come in and have the same money go back out. This is simply a process under legislation."

Edney added that there is no cost to the citizens of Chestermere to run the event. He says as of Tuesday (Sept. 10) the city has already brought in a large amount of money for the fundraiser.

"With all the sponsorships and registrations, we will bring in $105,000, spend $22,000, and have $83,000 for donation to charity."

Edney says he's hoping that number will increase by the day of the event. Tee off is at 1:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Golf Club.
