Katie Cares, the nonprofit founded by Ruth and Randy Reimer in honor of their daughter Katie, has grown from a heartfelt dream into a vital support system for families across Manitoba. What began as a deeply personal mission now touches countless lives, thanks to community backing through initiatives like the annual fashion show and auction.

The Auction: A New Addition

The online auction, introduced by Darrell from Grunthal Auction, has quickly become a significant part of Katie Cares' fundraising efforts. Darrell reached out after last year’s fashion show with the idea of adding an auction, believing it would be a valuable addition to their annual event. Ruth and her team embraced the concept, and the collaboration has been a great success. "Working with Darrell has been a pleasure," Ruth says, acknowledging the positive impact it has had on their fundraising goals.

This year’s auction features a wide array of items, including a beautiful handmade quilt, a playhouse from Grandeur, a kitchen set from Elias Woodwork, and even $350 of pork. Ruth highlights the diversity of offerings and explains that bids exceeding the retail value are tax-deductible.

The auction has attracted interest from across Manitoba, with bids coming in from communities near and far, a testament to the widespread support for Katie Cares and its mission.

Unwavering Community Support

The unwavering support from the community has been a profound source of strength for Ruth and Randy. Ruth observes that while it’s common for people to rally around others during moments of grief, long-term support is much rarer. "This was Katie’s dream," she reflects. "Even when she was sick, she wanted to give back." For Ruth, Katie Cares became a way to channel her own grief into something positive. "It was my sanity," she admits, acknowledging the deep emotional strength the nonprofit has provided her over the years.

Katie Cares’ impact has spread well beyond the local community, with support pouring in from across Manitoba, including areas like Winnipeg and Gimli. Ruth emphasizes how vital this broad support has been for their ability to continue offering services, like Katie’s Cottage. The Cottage provides families with a peaceful space near the hospital, whether they are welcoming a new baby or facing a challenging medical situation. "It’s a place for families during some of the darkest or happiest times," she shares. From parents waiting to meet their newborn to families supporting loved ones in critical condition, Katie’s Cottage offers them comfort and peace.

Fashion Show Tickets and Other Ways to Support

While tickets for the annual fashion show are sold out, Ruth reassures the community that there are still many ways to support Katie Cares. Donations are always welcome, and the online auction offers a great opportunity for people to contribute. Ruth encourages everyone to visit Katie’s Cottage to see the positive impact that generosity has had. "Pictures don’t do it justice," she says, urging supporters to experience the Cottage’s warmth firsthand.

Unique Auction Items for a Good Cause

The Grunthal Auction offers a diverse range of items, from a beautiful handmade quilt and a charming playhouse built by Grandeur, a kitchen set from Elias Woodwork and even $350 of pork. Ruth highlights the auction’s unique offerings and explains that bids exceeding the retail value are tax-deductible, thanks to Grunthal Auction’s generosity. "It’s a great way to support while receiving something wonderful in return," she says.

Looking Ahead

With the overwhelming success of the fashion show and auction, Ruth acknowledges the incredible support they’ve received. Though future auctions are still under discussion, the team is grateful for the success of this year’s event. "We’ve been so blessed with the support we’ve received," Ruth reflects. "It’s amazing to see how much people want to help."

In closing, Ruth shares a deeply personal message of gratitude to the community. "From my family to yours, a heartfelt thank you," she says, expressing her profound appreciation for the generosity and compassion that continues to keep Katie’s legacy alive.
