CJRB's 5th Meals in the Field winner, Gordon and Alice Urquhart, enjoyed a full feast at the Urquhart farm north of Killarney, compliments to Boundary Co-op, Killarney. Gordon's name was pulled at sponsor, Killarney Tire's Meals in the Field bucket.
Gordon and Alice, with their son Adam, were joined by neighbors and friends today at noon, filling up before getting back into the canola.
"The wheat was very good, but the canola is a little hit-and-miss," shares Adam. "Some of it's good, some of its poor. I think the heat took its toll on it. The soybeans look promising. We haven't gotten into them yet, but hopefully they're good as well."
The Urquhart family farms approximately 2300 acres between Ninette and Killarney. The recent rains put harvest on pause, but they were up and running again this afternoon with hopes to finish up their canola over the next number of days. Seeing sunshine and warm temperatures for the next number of days makes for a promising week of getting the crop off the field and into the bin.
Looking at this year's growing season as a whole, Adam says this year's wheat was better than last year, canola not so much.
"But we're hoping the beans will be better," he adds, "and we need some higher prices. Some of the fertilizer prices are still pretty high relative to the grain prices, but hopefully we can still make some money."
On behalf of the Urquhart family, Adam says a huge Thank You to our Meals in the Field sponsors.
"We're very appreciative of winning this meal, we do quite a bit of business at Killarney Tire and feel very fortunate to have won it! We always try to support our local businesses," shares the Urquhart's.
