Scarecrow Days is returning to Souris this weekend, marking its 33rd year of celebrating the Fall season in a fun and unique way.

Committee Chair, Loretta Turner, says the weekend revolves around the townwide yard sales that also feature characters from the different themes.  In the past, participants have dressed up their front yard scarecrows as characters of different genres of movies, such as the 1990's, or their favorite music-theme, or characters of their favorite fairy tales.

This year's theme will focus on Halloween, which opens up a whole host of possibilities including a doggie's trick or treat.

"Scarecrow Days all started with a scarecrow competition, which we continue this year again," shares Turner. "So, the scarecrows out there should be dressed up reflecting Halloween."

Judging takes place today (Thursday) starting at 9:00 am.

Prizes to be won include:

  • Best Business display - Winnings:  Social Media Package
  • Best Overall Display and Scarecrow - Winnings:  $250
  • Best 'Happy' Halloween - Winnings: $100
  • Best Halloween Movie display - Winnings: $100
  • Best Spooky & Haunted display - Winnings: $100

"The biggest draw is probably the townwide yard sales, which we have 59 on the map," she adds. "And then we build the weekend around that.  So, with the theme of Halloween we've seen some interesting and new events pop up that are really exciting.  Like, the daycare is doing a Halloween costume parade."

Additional events that are new to this year's lineup of activities include vegetables harvested right from the garden.

Pumpkin rolls will be hosted by Pembina Co-op, using the toboggan hill to hit a target.  The biggest pumpkin competition and the largest carrot competition takes place in the town parking lot. The regular Farmer's Market takes places Saturday from 9-11 am, but they've extended that market to 4 pm involving more booths and more veggies to be bought.

And the Zucchini 500 will feature zucchini car races down a specially constructed track thanks to host, Boulanger Construction.

From a donut eating contest to a Classic Car show, a Bar-B-Que fundraiser to U15 AAA Southwest Cougars vs Brandon Wheat Kings hockey game, the town of Souris will be full of Fall time features and fun events.

"Yes, there's lots going on," adds Turner. "Visit our social media platforms for the full schedule."
