Anthony Sernick, a current city councillor in Estevan, has officially declared his candidacy for mayor in the upcoming municipal election. With a strong focus on community development and a background in city infrastructure projects, Sernick aims to elevate his contributions to the city by stepping into the mayoral role.
Having served as a city councillor since 2020, Sernick attributes his decision to run for mayor to the relationships he has cultivated during his tenure. He expressed his desire to continue building on these connections, stating that the mayor's position offers greater visibility and influence to advocate for Estevan. “We want to let the province and the country know that we’re here, we have land, and we’re open for business,” he said.
Reflecting on his four years in council, Sernick highlighted several accomplishments, particularly in infrastructure improvements. He noted the upgrades to parks, roads, and underground systems, crediting the city’s managers and staff for their hard work.
Sernick's extensive career in the oil field has equipped him to handle community tensions and challenges. “I’ve endured 30 years of adversity in the oil field, and that experience allows me to calm people down and build them up,” he said. He views his ability to manage conflict and unite people as an essential asset for addressing some of the heated debates within the city.
If elected, Sernick's immediate priority will be to complete the ongoing downtown revitalization project. “It’s a big project, and we definitely want to get that buttoned up first and foremost,” he said, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing the downtown area and energizing local businesses.
Sernick articulated the qualities he believes will serve him well in the mayoral role: “I will bring professionalism, leadership, business development, and continuous improvement.”
As the election approaches, Sernick is encouraging Estevan residents to engage in the electoral process. He stressed the significance of voting and expressed hope for a record turnout. With a plebiscite on the ballot, he aims to drive participation, stating, “It’s time to get out and vote.”
With a clear message of leadership and a commitment to infrastructure and business development, Anthony Sernick seeks to bring his experience and vision to the mayor’s office.
