As the U18 AAA Estevan Bears prepare for their season opener against the Tisdale Trojans, head coach Ryan Pilon is eager to see his team hit the ice. Following a successful weekend of exhibition games, the Bears are looking to build momentum with a roster that blends experienced veterans and promising new talent.

Reflecting on the weekend’s games, Pilon noted the Bears used the opportunity to rest some of their veteran players and give affiliate players (APs) a chance to compete.

"The first game, it was a good opportunity that we could get some rest for some of our older veteran players and got in some AP players, which was nice to see where they stack up," Pilon said.

The Bears faced a challenging opponent in their second game against a heavy Southwest Manitoba team, but Pilon was pleased with his team’s performance, particularly their dominance in shots on goal.

"We outshot them by a large margin. Again, it’s just building, stepping stones, getting ready for this coming weekend."

Excitement for the season opener is growing, especially with the return of key player Cameron Alley from the WHL.

"We’ve had a good week of practice here so far, preparing for this weekend. I know all the players are riding the high of last season, so they’re wanting to get going and play some meaningful games," Pilon added.

Fans can expect a fast-paced and disciplined style of play when the Bears take the ice on Saturday.

"We’re going to be fast. We want to play that exciting brand of hockey that we've now built for the last three years. We’re going to be disciplined," Pilon said.

He also expressed gratitude for the community’s support, which has been essential to the team’s success.

"We wouldn’t be where we are without the community support. The exhibition games were very well attended, and it's an exciting league of hockey."

As the Bears prepare for the upcoming season, Pilon and his team are focused on being competitive and making another strong push for the playoffs.
