The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have clinched a playoff spot. The Bombers, who started the season 0-4, won their seventh straight game 55-27 over the Edmonton Elks. Zach Collaros threw for 432 yards and a career high six touchdown passes. Kenny Lawler caught eight passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Winnipeg had a 34-6 lead at halftime. The Blue Bombers are in first place in the CFL’s West Division with a 9-6 record. Winnipeg’s next game is Friday, October 4th against the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton. The Bombers will clinch first place and a bye the West final with a win over the Tabbies.


The Southwest Cougars lost their 2024-25 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season opener 4-3 to the Winnipeg Wild at Hockey for All Centre. Lynden Gould scored twice for the Cougars who face the Pembina Valley Hawks tonight in Morden.


The Brandon Wheat Kings are 3-0 to start the 2024-25 Western Hockey League season. Marcus Nguyen scored twice and Ethan Eskit made 32 saves as Brandon beat the Prince Albert Raiders 4-1. Roger McQueen and Dominik Petr also scored for the Wheat Kings who face the Blades in Saskatoon tonight.


The Winnipeg Jets lost 8-5 to the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. Joel Eriksson Elk had two goals and three assists for the Wild who scored seven times in the second period. Cole Perfetti, Mason Appleton, Nikita Chibrikov, Brayden Yager and Morgan Barron did the goal scoring for the Jets who play their fifth of six pre-season games Wednesday against the Flames in Calgary. Winnipeg defenseman Logan Stanley will undergo surgery on his knee and will be out a minimum of for weeks.


Jordon McDonald, Kate Cameron and Kaitlyn Lawes will play in the semifinals at the 2024 PointsBet Invitational in Calgary. McDonald defeated Kevin Koe of Calgary 8-4; Cameron beat Allyson MacNutt of Halifax 12-3 while Lawes downed Selena Sturmay of Edmonton 6-4 in the Elite 8. Chelsea Carey lost 8-6 to Kayla Skrlik of Calgary.
