Bryan Laing and Kole Beard did the goal scoring for Southwest. Brody Cameron made 35 saves. The Cougars play their home opener Wednesday against the Yellowhead Chiefs in Souris.
The Virden Oil Capitals dropped a 3-1 decision to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard Saturday at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Quincy Supprien scored all three goals for the Blizzard. Brett Sabel replied for the Caps. Virden netminder Gavin Renwick made 27 saves.
The Brandon Wheat Kings have suffered their first loss of the 2024-25 Western Hockey League season. Brandon dropped a 4-3 decision to Saskatoon. Rowan Calvert scored his second goal of the game on the power play with 3:03 left in the third period for the Blades. Luke Shipley, Marcus Nguyen and Roger McQueen with his sixth of the season replied for the visiting Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason faced 38 shots.
The International Ice Hockey Federation has revamped roster sizes of the women’s world hockey championship and women’s world under-18 championship. Teams can carry 22 skaters and three goalies instead of 20 skaters and three goalies. The 2025 women’s world championship will be held next April in Czechia.
Jordon McDonald, Kate Cameron and Kaitlyn Lawes lost out in the semifinals of the 2024 PointsBet Invitational in Calgary. McDonald fell 9-7 to Brad Gushue of St. John’s; Cameron dropped a 10-4 decision to Kayla Skrlik of Calgary and Lawes lost 10-5 to Rachel Homan of Ottawa.
