Nik Trakakis made 24 saves in the Virden Oil Capitals 3-1 victory over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard Sunday at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Parker Rolston, Luke Robson and Tyler Dodgson did the goal scoring for the Caps.
The Manitoba Moose begin training camp today at Hockey for All Centre. 27 players are on the Moose training camp roster including 14 forwards, nine defensemen and four goaltenders. Former Steinbach Pistons netminder Matthew Thiessen, who played at the University of Minnesota-Duluth last season, will attend Moose camp on a tryout agreement.
Mike McEwen and Rachel Homan captured the 2024 PointsBet Invitational Sunday in Calgary. McEwen scored four in the first end and pulled away thanks at a three-ender in the sixth en route to an 8-3 victory over Brad Gushue in the men’s final. McEwen, third Colton Flasch, second/vice-skip Kevin Marsch and lead Daniel Marsch earned $50,000. Homan stole three in the seventh end and beat Kayla Skrlik 8-3 in the women’s final. Homan and her reigning World championship team of vice-skip Tracy Fleury second Emma Miskew and lead Sarah Wilkes also won $50,000.
Canada’s women’s 15s rugby squad opened its WXV 1 Tournament in Vancouver with a 46-24 victory over France. Fancy Bermudez and Laetitia Royer each scored a pair of tries for the world’s third ranked Canadians who are hosting the international tournament for the first time.
