You’ve driven past it countless times- the little blue building at the corner of Mackenzie and Brandt. But have you ever given it any thought?

Barkman Appliance Service has sat at this intersection for the last decade, but the company itself has been part of the southeast business scene since 1983, with ownership passed down from father to son.

“When I was a kid, Dad would give me all these ready-for-the-trash appliances,” shares current owner Brad Barkman. “I’d take them apart- I really enjoyed it! And now I’m in this trade, and still really love it.”

Having been in the industry for such a long time, Barkman has had the opportunity to personally witness the shift in consumer patterns, returning to what they had been decades ago.

“Lots of people, including myself, are not in a place to replace things every time it breaks,” he admits. “Most of the time, repairing is a much more economical solution than going and buying a new one. I’ve kind of seen it come full circle, where now people are choosing to invest the money in keeping something they like running.”

And so… business has been booming.

“We’re very busy, yes. With all the new technology, it’s takes more and more skill, more of an advanced technician, to do the job. Even I have to keep up with training to stay on top of changes.”

After a stretch of attempting to transition towards additional evening and weekend work, thinking that this would best serve his clientele, Barkman has returned to standard weekday hours of operation.

“Maybe customers don’t want to hear this, but we really try to stay away from evening and weekend work. We tried the emergency appliance repair stuff, but appliances are so diverse now that 90% of the time we have to order a part.” Barkman continues. “There was no benefit in us going out and the customer paying a premium for an evening for a weekend, just to learn that the only thing we can do is order a part.”

Having tested the evening and weekend waters, Barkman can now confirm that it’s best for his company to stick to regular weekday hours, which may be encouraging to those looking to join the company.

Barkman Appliance Service is expanding their team, looking to add a few technicians to keep up with increasing demand. Responsibilities include diagnostics and repairs of appliances in businesses and residences across southeast Manitoba. Work hours are full time from Monday to Friday, and ongoing mentoring, training, and coaching is provided.

The successful candidate will have previous experience in appliance repair, be able to lift 50lbs, and possess a clean criminal record and a valid Manitoba drivers’ license. Benefits include a competitive salary, a Health Spending Account, personal use of a company vehicle, an annual tool allowance, and more.

“Let me show you what we have to offer- it might be something you’re interested in, it might not, but at least you’ll know your options.”
