Ride for Refuge set to support transitional housing in the Pembina Valley on October 5th
Genesis House, a non-profit organization in the Pembina Valley, is gearing up to participate in the Ride for Refuge on October 5th. The nationwide fundraiser will support shelters and programs across Canada, with Genesis House focusing on raising funds for its transitional housing project for survivors of domestic violence and abuse.
Fundraiser to support transitional housing
Ang Braun, Executive Director of Genesis House, spoke about the significance of the Ride for Refuge. "This is a fundraiser specifically for our transitional housing," Braun explained. All proceeds from the event will be directed toward a special fund supporting the shelter's efforts to provide safe housing. “We’ve been working on transitional housing for a number of years already, behind the scenes, and we really need this service.”
The growing demand for safe housing
Genesis House has long provided critical services to those affected by domestic violence, but Braun stressed that the need has grown. "It’s been a crazy time ever since COVID. Pre-COVID, we might have had a room or two available every week. These days, it’s very rare to find a room anywhere across the province," she said, highlighting the housing crisis that is impacting vulnerable populations.

Ride for Refuge: A nationwide event
The Ride for Refuge is part of a larger, nationwide effort, with various shelters and organizations participating. Genesis House is also engaging in a friendly rivalry with a sister organization in Regina. "We have a sister organization in Regina that contacted us and said, ‘Hey, maybe we can get some competition going between the Roughriders and Blue Bomber fans,'" Braun shared.
For those considering joining the event, there are routes for every fitness level. "We have a variety of routes. It’s not like you have to be athletic to join us," Braun said. Participants can choose between two- and five-kilometer routes, and walking or pushing strollers is also welcome. "We just want to see you out."
Event details and participation
The event will start at the Access Event Centre in Morden, with a lunch provided for all participants. Braun expressed hope that this will become an annual event. "We’re hoping this is something we can continue year after year," she said.
Opportunities to donate
Donations are encouraged for those unable to attend. "You can go online and pick the team 'Genesis House Gems' and drop some money there for sure," Braun stated. She also noted that the community has been consistently generous in responding to calls for supplies. "The community is so amazing. We’ll put out a call if we’re out of cereal, and boxes will come to our aid. It’s just unbelievable."
The October 5th event is a crucial step forward for Genesis House as they continue to address the pressing need for safe housing for those in crisis.
