The Brake for Breakfast is on at Sobey's in Portage la Prairie. The event aims to raise money and food for the breakfast program in the Portage la Prairie School Division.
PortageOnline caught up with Lawrence McKenzie, Principal at Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI), to understand why the breakfast program is important.
"For the students here at PCI, it's the knowledge that they can come to school and know that they can get food so they can then be focused for the rest of the day. They're not having to worry about sitting in class being hungry, and just knowing that that's there consistently, every day, for any of our students to take advantage of it."
McKenzie points out that these programs don't happen without those in the city rallying to the cause.
"The support of the community is huge. Without having people making the donations of cereal or money, we probably wouldn't be able to offer the program as well as we do. If we can help fill that void by giving our students a bite to eat to set their day off in the right way so that they're not having to worry about being hungry, and they can focus on learning, that's a great thing. So, we really depend on the community for their support."
PortageOnline, CFRY, Mix 96 and Country 93 will be on location at Sobey's in Portage from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on October 10, taking donations and collecting names for various prize draws throughout the day.
