Winkler Fire Department responded late Thursday afternoon, shortly after 5 p.m., to a controlled burn fanned out of control by breezy winds.

Crews arrived at the field fire north of the city on Road 22 West, between Road 14 and 15 North, and found the flames heading east from a farmyard through a portion of a corn field already harvested.

Chief Richard Paetzold says the fire was extinguished using a combination of fire truck based hose-lines, a mobile wildfire unit and utilizing a tractor with disc. He noted, fortunately, there was some space before the unharvested corn in the field could be reached by the flames.

There was no damage to any structures or equipment, and no injuries in the incident.
