Link Neufeld talks blues, harmonicas, and upcoming concert

Local harmonica sensation Link Neufeld, of the band Link & the Moustaches, stopped by for an exciting morning of music and conversation. Known for his dynamic harmonica skills, Link discussed his musical journey, the upcoming concert, and even treated listeners to a live in-studio performance.

A love for the harmonica and the blues

Link’s journey with the harmonica started in his childhood when his dad gave him one. “I started noodling around, and then I found a Muddy Waters tape that really influenced me. That’s where it all started,” he shared. When asked if he ever imagined being one of the most respected harmonica players in southern Manitoba, Neufeld said, “It’s exceeded all of my expectations. My goal was just to play one song on stage, and now, here we are.”

Harmonica techniques and influences

Neufeld also gave some insight into the harmonica world, explaining why he always has so many harmonicas with him. “They’re in different keys and have different sounds for certain applications,” he said. His favorites? “Marine band Hohner harmonicas in the key of A or D—they just sound the nicest.”

When asked about his influences, Neufeld didn’t hesitate to mention harmonica greats Kim Wilson and Steve Mariner, as well as local legends Big Dave McLean and JP Lepage. “They’ve had a huge influence on me, not just musically but through the advice and encouragement they’ve given over the years.”

The current lineup and what to expect at the show

The concert on October 26th at P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall is set to be a memorable show, with a variety of blues classics and some original songs. Neufeld revealed the lineup for the band: “Steve (Dueck) is always there, Scott Bell is on bass, and Mike Hiebert has stepped in on drums while Gil recovers from some health issues.”

The band will be joined by two opening acts, Steve & Janessa, and Two Crows for Comfort. Neufeld praised both, saying, “They’re amazing. Honestly, I think we should be opening for them.”

Looking ahead and what’s next

As for what’s next after the October 26th concert, Neufeld says the band is taking things one step at a time. “We’re going to wait until Gil heals up, and then we’ll see what the future holds.”
