Dana Haukaas, executive director of the Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS), said they have been helping with cats in a South Hill property mentioned on social media earlier this week. “There is a window that’s out in the attic, and the attic is completely separate from the rest of the house.”

She added that they did try to trap the mom and her kittens in June. “The momma is very stealthy, and we were not able to catch her, but we did get all of the kittens.”

The initial batch of kittens from June were all adopted. “We got another call that momma has had another batch of kittens, so the community has made arrangements – they think they can find the kittens all homes, because space is tight for us, so we have loaned them a trap.”

“While it is outside of the city bylaw time to trap, the weather is quite nice, and they’ve agreed to only trap when it’s the warmer part of the day,” explained Haukaas.

She added that the person who owns the property will board up the window so no more cats can enter the property.

Cat trapping can be done from March to the beginning of October. “It can’t be too hot, it can’t be too cold, and the cat traps can only be set during our business hours, so that when you catch the cat, you can bring it into us.”

People setting their own traps should be in contact with the Moose Jaw Humane Society or SCRAPS to keep them aware, so they’re prepared for them to come in.

Haukaas spoke about what residents should do if they find cats outside. “If you do see a cat, and it looks well-fed, it’s wearing a collar, it’s friendly – leave it where it is. That’s its best chance to find its way home. If the cat does look thin, kind of grotty-looking, and it’s friendly, give us a call. If the cat is very scared and skittish and doesn’t want anything to do with you – reach out to SCRAPS.”

If you’ve been looking to add a kitten to your home, now is a good time. The Moose Jaw Humane Society has waived their $50 adoption fee for kittens until the end of October “The only fee you would pay is the $100 spay/neuter deposit.”
