“In Manitoba, distance shouldn’t be a barrier to cancer treatment.”
This from Sharilyn Knox, Executive Director at Central Plains Cancer Services, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families across more than 70 communities in rural Manitoba.
“We offer vital transportation services and a range of support programs, all made possible through the generosity of donations, community partnerships, and engaging fundraising events,” reveals Knox.
Their Volunteer Driver Program has made cancer related appointments more accessible for people across the region. For just $30 per trip, patients can access treatment that’s critical to their recovery. But Knox reveals the true cost of each trip can range from $100 to $200, depending on the distance – and CPCS covers the difference.
This is why, this fall, CPCS is launching their annual Drive Away Cancer campaign – raising funds for their Volunteer Driver Program, which plays a crucial role in helping patients reach their essential cancer treatments.
“Funds raised through the Drive Away Cancer campaign bridges the gap in transportation costs, ensuring rides remain affordable for patients while upholding the high standards of our Volunteer Driver Program,” notes Knox. “This support can significantly enhance a person’s chances of recovery and overall well-being. By donating, you’re not just fueling hope for individuals facing cancer; you’re also strengthening our community and ensuring that no one has to fight this battle alone.”
Contrary to what you might expect from the name, their service region extends well beyond Central Plains. CPCS serves over 70 rural communities in Manitoba – bridging the gap to treatment appointments. Knox points out that this means that for some patients, their treatments are well over 150 kilometers away.
“We have volunteer drivers heading north to McCreary, south to Swan Lake, east to Elie, west to Minnedosa. Northwest to Erickson, northeast to Poplar Point, southeast to Macdonald, southwest to Glenora – and well beyond – to pick up patients and drive them to their appointments in Winnipeg, Brandon, or other Cancer Care Manitoba Program locations in our region. So you can well imagine these can be exhausting trips, in addition to the exhaustion of treatment.”
Many of these volunteer drivers know from personal experience what it’s like. They, or someone they love, has been in this position before. They understand why this service is so very important, and the part they can play in helping.
“Our volunteer drivers are the heartbeat of our service, providing invaluable support to patients and making a real impact in their lives,” shares Knox.
CPCS is always looking for drivers. If you’re interested in joining this incredible team, you can reach out by sending an email to info@cpcancerservices.com
In addition to volunteers, donations also play a vital role in providing resources and funding to fuel the CPCS transportation program.
“With your support, we can continue to offer safe, affordable rides for those who need them most.”
Donating is a breeze! Keep an eye on your mailbox, or you can easily make a contribution online at centralplainscancerservices.com.
“Your donation will help ensure patients can focus on their fight against cancer – not the distance to care,” notes Knox. “Thank you for helping us Drive Away Cancer.”
