The family of Murray Sinclair, former senator and chair of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has shared a statement honouring his legacy and detailing how the public can pay their respects.

Known as Mazina Giizhik, or "The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky," Sinclair passed away early Monday morning, surrounded by loved ones.

Reflecting on his life, the family celebrated Sinclair's dedication to service, noting his impact on Residential School Survivors, law students, and those he encountered in the courtroom.

The statement says that Sinclair "committed his life in service to the people: creating change, revealing truth, and leading with fairness throughout his career."

The family describes him as a compassionate listener who treated everyone with dignity and fairness.

Donations can be made in Murray Sinclair's memory

To continue his legacy of supporting Indigenous communities, the family requested donations be made to The Murray Sinclair Memorial Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation.

Donations will benefit Indigenous women, children, families, and Survivors – causes Sinclair championed throughout his life.

A sacred fire has been lit outside the Manitoba Legislative Building, inviting mourners to offer tobacco and best wishes for Sinclair’s journey.

The family respectfully requests that no other fires be lit in his honour across the country in the coming days.

Details on public ceremonies will be shared soon as the family asks for privacy during this time of mourning.
