The Strathmore & District Agricultural Society asked town council on Wednesday (Nov. 13) for funding for the Strathmore Stampede and space to host the RCMP Musical Ride event.

"Since that time when I came to see you in 2019, our revenues have reached $3.85 million. They were $1.9 million in that time in 2019," says Ryan Schmidt, general manager of the Strathmore Ag Society.

Schmidt mentioned the society has $3.5 million in expenses and any profit is being put back into the community.

"We know from our statistics that 55 per cent of the attendees of the Strathmore Stampede come from outside of the Town of Strathmore."

The overall economic impact of the Stampede is over $5 million, and Schmidt says 95 per cent of revenues for the society are self-generated.

"We'd very much appreciate it if the town would continue to support the Strathmore Stampede with a three-year agreement at $28,000."

Schmidt added that the partnership would include branding, marketing, and hosting opportunities for the future.

Meagan Miller, head of operations with the society also asked council for the space to bring in the RCMP Musical Ride at the Strathmore Family Centre Arena.

"The fact that they are interested in coming back to our town shows how much they enjoyed the hospitality given by our community," says Miller.

Councillor Debbie Mintzer asked about additional costs for the Musical Ride.

Schmidt told council there would be no cost to the town besides the usage of the blue side of the Family Centre.

"We'd need to purchase feed and shavings. Renting the panels for setting up all the stalls. But we would look after that through other funds."

Councillor Denise Peterson asked if there is a potential for kids to sponsor a horse for the Musical Ride.

Schmidt responded by saying members of the organization will be coming to Strathmore on November 24 to map out the potential spot and he plans to ask them then.

Mayor Pat Fule says next week council will look into the funding and spacing request during budget discussions.
