With the dust still settling on last night's municipal elections across Saskatchewan, let me take you back to the 90s when up-to-the-minute results weren't available on-line. No, the best place to go was your radio.
I was the news director at CHAB-Moose Jaw and I was anchoring our coverage from the studio while a team of reporters were set up for a remote broadcast from council chambers at city hall.
The two young fellows who would provide the updates were instructed to test the broadcast equipment that afternoon but as the polls were about to close and our show was about to go on air, I learned they had not done that. I was angry and a heated telephone discussion ensued.
A few minutes later, the boys got their equipment fired up and it was all good. I could hear them on queue. In fact, I heard one of them telling the other how he felt about me after that heated conversation we just had. He used some most colourful language which I quoted upon their return to the radio station at the end of the night.
His face turned beet red. He thought he was about to get fired.
I enjoyed that for a moment and then apologized to him and told him he had done a good job, which he had.
We had a laugh, we shook hands and moved on.
I'll bet he still tells that story too.
