A system moving up from Texas is expected to bring winter weather to Winnipeg and southern Manitoba this week.

"It's a low-pressure system coming from the United States," says Kyle McAulay, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. "It's going to be affecting the province starting tonight, just after midnight. It's going to generally start as rain and some chances of freezing rain."

November has brought warmer-than-usual temperatures to southern Manitoba.

"We expect the rain to transition into snow in some places overnight tonight. For Winnipeg, that'll happen more on Tuesday overnight into Wednesday."

The city of Winnipeg is expected to see roughly 10-15 mm of rain over the course of Tuesday followed by 5-10 cm of snow on Wednesday.

"There's going to be some pretty strong winds associated with this low-pressure system, roughly 40-60 or even 70 km/h winds. If there's falling snow at the same time, you can expect reduced visibility."

As the week progresses, the temperatures will most likely fall below zero and stay that way until spring, according to Environment Canada.
