A Friday night full of generosity and fun
The Morden Christmas Cheer game brought the community together this past Friday night, filling the stands at the Access Event Centre with energy, goodwill, and plenty of holiday spirit. Organized by the Morden Thunder hockey team, the event raised a remarkable $5,822.63 and collected a significant amount of food and toys for local families in need this holiday season.
“This night has been absolutely amazing,” said Chelsey Delaquis, a dedicated member of the Morden Christmas Cheerboard. “Everybody's been so generous. The vibe has been incredible, and the game has been so much fun. It’s just been a great night overall.”
A community effort supported by local businesses
The event highlighted the collective effort of local businesses and community members who came together for a good cause. Donations from The Heat Wave concession, including cotton candy that proved a big hit, added to the festive atmosphere. Silent auctions and raffles also boosted fundraising efforts.
Reflecting on the overwhelming support, Delaquis expressed gratitude. “It’s huge to see so many businesses supporting not just us, but also the high school team,” she said. “We know businesses get asked for donations all the time, and it means so much that they continue to give back to the community through events like this.”
Friendly rivalry brings excitement
The night’s main event was a friendly but spirited hockey game between the Morden Thunder and Guns and Hoses—a team made up of members of the Morden Police and Fire Department. Sean Aune, an inspector with the Morden Police Service, played for Guns and Hoses, while his son suited up for the Morden Thunder.
“It’s awesome,” said Aune about the chance to face off against his son on the ice. “You see the smiles out there, and it’s just a great experience. The turnout has been amazing, and hearing the businesses being thanked during the announcements was fantastic. If this becomes an annual event, it’s going to be something really special for the community.”
Though Guns and Hoses put up a strong fight, the real winners of the night were the families who will benefit from the generosity of the community.
The true spirit of Christmas
The funds raised will directly support the Morden Christmas Cheerboard’s efforts to make the holiday season brighter for families in need. “We are continuously floored by the generosity of our community,” read a post-event message from the Christmas Cheerboard. “Because of you, someone’s holiday season will be brighter.”
As the night wrapped up, the sentiment shared by many was clear: Morden’s community spirit is alive and well, proving that when people come together, they can truly make a difference.
