On Friday, December 27 at 7:30pm, at St. Andrews River Heights United Church the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (WMC) will be holding their annual scholarship winner’s recital.
Six marvelous Manitoba musicians have won 11, 500 dollars in prizes and on Friday the 27th, they will have the opportunity to show what set them apart from the rest.
The first-place winner of the WMC $3000 dollar scholarship is pianist Angela Ng. Currently in her third year of her undergraduate at the University of Toronto, Angela is studying with Lydia Wong who is the Area Head of the Piano Department at U of T.
Highlights of her extraordinary early career include being named the Grand Prize winner at the Canadian Music Competition in 2017. She also received numerous accolades at the Winnipeg Music Festival, including the prestigious Aikins Memorial Trophy in 2021. In 2017, Angela made her orchestral debut with the Orchestre de la Francophonie and performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as part of the first-place winner ceremony for the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition.

The second prize winner of a WMC Scholarship is violinist River Sawchyn. Currently studying at the Robert McDuffie Centre for Strings at Mercer University in Macon Georgia. River is a passionate student of chamber music, working with members of the Cavani, Emerson and Ehnes string quartets. He enjoys performing chamber music throughout the year.
In the summers he spends his time studying at various summer music institutes. Studying at such places as the Rome Chamber Music Festival, Colorado College Summer Music Festival, Orford Music Academy and Scotia Fest
He is also a composer and has been taking composition lessons at the Townsend School of Music with Christopher Schmitz.
River Sawchyn Talks about his upcoming performance:
The third-place winner of the Madeleine Gauvin Scholarship of 2000 dollars is soprano Diana Rockwell.
Diana is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the University of Manitoba, studying with Tracy Dahl. Prior to her Studies at the Desautels faculty of Music, she was a student in the Vocal Performance program at the University of Alberta, where she earned her BMus.
Aside from her prize from the WMC, Dainna won the Rose Bowl trophy with the Winnipeg Music Festival in 2024, Diana also was the First Prize winner in the 2023 CFMTA National Vocal Competition.
