Classic 107 is adding to your holiday soundtrack in unique ways this year, providing music that gives voice to every emotion and experience of the holiday season.

In addition to sharing well-loved pieces that listeners have come to love over the years, including the Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve and Handel’s Messiah on the morning of Christmas Day, the station will be sharing some deeper dives into the music that makes up the season during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The holidays aren’t a joyous time for everyone, but one way to counteract life’s darker emotions is to give voice to them together. Franz Schubert’s Die Winterreise (“Winter’s Journey”) is a microcosm of those darker emotions – grief, depression, anxiety, and loneliness – and a new recording of the song cycle by soprano and pianist Rachel Fenlon was Classic 107’s Album of the Month for December. Rachel joins Morning Light host Nolan Kehler from London, England to go through the song cycle, add some hopeful music that can counteract these lower feelings, and share what these songs have meant to her in her life’s journey.

December 29th, 6.a.m. to 12 p.m. – Bach's Christmas Oratorio

Journey back to 1734 with Bach’s revolutionary cantata collection meant specifically for the time between Christmas and Epiphany on a special edition of White Light. Host Nolan Kehler will be joined by Dr. Dietrich Bartel, professor emeritus at Canadian Mennonite University, who will give us a detailed look at how Bach’s music helps us observe the holiday season and why this music still resonates with us 290 years after it was first shared.

December 30th 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. – The Year in Classical Music

Nolan Kehler and Chris Wolf will sit down together with some of their favourite classical music recordings of the year and talk about what makes them so great. It’s the perfect way to say goodbye to the year that was, and to remember some of the extraordinary artists who passed away in 2024.

December 31st, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. – A History of the Waltz

Nolan Kehler guides listeners like a good dance partner through the history of one of classical music’s most iconic dance forms, from the foothills of the Alps to the grandest concert halls in the world!

You can tune in to all of this programming on 107.1 FM in Winnipeg, on the Classic 107 app, or at classic107.com.
