For Ken Dyck, hockey has always been more than just a game – it’s a tradition, a way to bring family together, and a cherished part of the Steinbach community.
What started as a love for the sport has blossomed into a family tradition that has spanned years at the rink. “We call it B-I-Ls night,” says Ken, referring to the tradition he began with his three brothers-in-law, Jake Dyck, Andy Kehler, and Sjoerd Huese. "Me and my three brothers-in-law purchased season tickets in year two of the team being in our community, and we kept it going.”
Every "B-I-Ls night" begins with dinner with their wives. The ladies follow the action on the Steinbach Pistons app while Ken and the brothers-in-law head to the rink to cheer on the Pistons. “After the game, we all meet up to talk about the game with our wives over a piece of cake or dessert,” Sjoerd adds with a smile.
Through the years, hockey has continued to create more than just memories for Ken and his family – it has transformed into an integral part of their lives. They've cheered through it all, from the early days to major improvements under the leadership of Paul Dyck and the community.
“The games are a neat experience,” Ken shares. “Everybody talks to each other. I’ve developed many new friends at the games over the years. You develop relationships with everyone sitting around you throughout the season. It’s fun!”
But it hasn’t all been smooth skating. Over the years, the group had to say goodbye to Jake when he sadly passed away. For Ken, keeping Jake’s memory alive has been a priority. When the old Centennial Arena was taken down, Ken secured meaningful mementos. He kept the old 2x6s, painted gray, from the top row of Centennial and added them alongside the fire pit at his cabin – a way to ensure those memories always remain close.
This story of connection and tradition is what the Steinbach Pistons mean to this region. “The team puts our community out there, draws us together, and gives our community something to support together,” Ken explains.
