Originally from Nigeria, a Winnipeg Christian artist is sharing new music with deep faith and Afro beats.
"My first memory of where music started from when I was in the U.K.," says Oboise Umobuarie. "We had to play a sequence on the drums. I was one of the only people who picked it up. I moved to another school and took up playing the piano, I taught myself. We moved a lot and I found myself in the church choir, which my mom encouraged me to be in."
Umobuarie's parents moved him and his brother to many different countries. Once they moved to Canada, they lived in Calgary and Regina before finally moving to Winnipeg in 2020.
"Winnipeg is a very nice city. It's not Regina, in a good way. Regina is too small and inactive for me. There's quite a bit to do here [in Winnipeg.]"
Umobuarie has been writing his own music since 2016. He recently released three singles, including "Talk & Do."
"I had gone to the studio, recorded the first song. I came back and realized there was something more, so I called up a friend. One of the choruses says, 'What my God cannot do, does not exist.' It's all to give God thanks and appreciate him for what he's doing. He's a mighty God."
The other songs on his EP, Faithful Father, are "Hallelu" and "Oh My Daddy." The EP came out on Jan. 25, 2025.
