In a tragic turn of events, the world of music has lost two influential French saxophonists, Jean-Marie Londeix and Éric Barret, within hours of each other. Both musicians were icons in their respective fields, contributing to the legacy of saxophone music in their own unique ways.

Jean-Marie Londeix (1932–2025)

Jean-Marie Londeix, a towering figure in the classical music world, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 92. Known for his deep commitment to expanding the saxophone’s repertoire, Londeix was a passionate advocate for contemporary composers. He worked closely with some of the most esteemed names in 20th-century classical music, including Olivier Messiaen, Henri Sauguet, and Edison Denisov, helping to bring their works to life for the saxophone.

Throughout his illustrious career, Londeix was not only a performer but also an educator, influencing generations of saxophonists with his technical expertise and expressive playing. His dedication to the classical saxophone led him to perform at prestigious venues around the world, and his influence on the instrument's standing in classical music remains immeasurable.

Éric Barret (1958–2025)

Later on the same day, the jazz world lost Éric Barret, a distinguished French tenor saxophonist, who tragically died after a fall during a mountain hike at the age of 66. Barret was known for his unique and deeply introspective approach to jazz, often shying away from the spotlight. He was a reserved figure, preferring to let his music speak for itself, which is reflected in his sparse discography—releasing an album only every decade.

Barret’s contributions to the world of jazz were significant despite his modest presence. His work was characterized by a deep, contemplative tone and a masterful understanding of improvisation. As a member of various influential jazz ensembles in France, Barret helped shape the sound of European jazz during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His music remains a testament to his artistry and quiet dedication to his craft.
