For over two hours, roughly 70 university students in Kentucky wrote out all 21 chapters of the gospel of John on the sidewalk in hopes of sharing the good news of Jesus with fellow students.
The students who participated in the sidewalk chalk project were from Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM), Cru, and Hilltoppers for Christ (HFC). They spent Monday evening into Tuesday early morning writing out the 879 verses in chalk.
The verses spanned over two miles where students walking to class Tuesday morning could read the brightly coloured Scripture.
"People look for answers in a lot of different things, and I think it's really good to have answers right in front of them," said BCM Vice President Luke Alford.
Multiple students commented on the 'art project.'
"It's my goal for the year, to get more connected with God," one of the freshmen, Ryan Cantabeni, said. "It's really nice to have some kind of sign showing me [to] keep doing this."
One female student who doesn't identify as a Christian could still appreciate its vibrancy.
"A lot of people probably don't appreciate it enough, but I think it's pretty, and it adds colors to the campus," said Jenna Kittrell to the Kentucky Times.
It has also been met with some criticism from a few, considering the university isn't explicitly Christian.
"You could have spent those hours at a soup kitchen or volunteering," said someone anonymously on the campus forum. B"eing an actual servant of the lord. Not just writing with chalk that's gonna be washed away by Friday's thunderstorm."
One of the organizers of the project shared the heart behind it on social media.
"The purpose of this is to evangelize and share the true gospel and make Jesus known to all the college students across WKU and be a light to all. It was so much fun to be able to have a part in this opportunity!"
