A non-profit organization in Winnipeg that feeds thousands of people in need is on their way to completing its first-ever building.

"We're a couple months into construction and there's lots going on at Agape Table," says Jim Steep, the Executive Director of Agape Table. "It's very exciting. We're anticipating a new home for Agape Table. We hope to open the doors, maybe Valentine's Day next year."

Construction is underway as the active project for the non-profit's first-ever location is busy in progress. While the capital campaign for the new build is going well, day-to-day operations are still in need of support.

"The current needs are food, time, and money," says Dave Feniuk, General Manager of Agape Table. "Without food, we can't do what we do. Last year we were just shy of [giving away] 173,000 meals."

With only nine on staff to help make and hand-out these meals, the organization is also always looking for people and groups to help volunteer.

"Our numbers are rising again now that the weather is getting nicer," says Feniuk. "We're using between 25 and 30 volunteers every day. Between operations and the capital, money's imperative to the rising cost of everything."

Between Monday and Friday, Agape hands out bagged lunches between 7-11 a.m. This includes soup, a sandwich, a pastry, fruits and vegetables, as well as a dessert. They also have giveaways at the front door when people need extras such as a loaf of bread or an item of clothing.

"There's so much month left at the end of the money right now that people are finding themselves desperate and reaching out to just make ends meet."

Upcoming Event

In August, Agape Table is hosting a fundraising golf tournament at Southwood Golf Course.

"It'll be Tuesday, Aug. 19," says Steep. "It's exciting because we have a lot more people on board this year. Half the field is already full and we just started sending out the info a week ago."

Anyone interested in donating or volunteering with Agape Table can do so on their website. People interested in registering for the golf tournament can do so here

People that decide to donate to Agape Table's capital campaign, which helps fund their new building project, will be matched in funds by their payroll company Payworks.
