The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is set to close its season with a historic triple bill, marking the farewell of Artistic Director André Lewis after a remarkable 50-year tenure. Lewis, who has led the company for three decades, will take his final bow at the Centennial Concert Hall from May 1–4, 2025, in what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of his legacy.
A Tribute to a Visionary Leader
Under Lewis' leadership, the RWB has cemented its reputation as a pioneering force in the ballet world. As he prepares to take his final curtain call, audiences will experience a program that reflects his commitment to innovation, artistry, and excellence.
"As I prepare for my final performances with RWB, I am filled with gratitude for the dancers, choreographers, audiences, and colleagues who have made this journey so unforgettable," Lewis shared. "This program reflects the passion and innovation that have driven my career, and I invite everyone to share in this moment of artistic celebration."
A Captivating Triple Bill
The season finale will feature three dynamic works that showcase the breadth of RWB's talent and creative vision:
-
Mark Godden's Angels in the Architecture – A poetic and visually stunning piece set to Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, reflecting themes of unity and simplicity.
-
Stephan Azulay's Bolero – The RWB Principal Dancer makes his choreographic mainstage debut with a flamenco-inspired interpretation of Maurice Ravel’s legendary score.
-
Itzik Galili’s Hikarizatto – A powerhouse of athleticism and technical brilliance, set to a driving percussive score, immersing audiences in a world of kinetic energy.
The production is supported by The Asper Foundation, with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra providing live accompaniment, adding to the grandeur of this milestone event.
A Legacy of Excellence
Throughout his career, Lewis has nurtured generations of dancers and brought groundbreaking works to the RWB stage. His influence has shaped not only the company but also the Canadian ballet landscape, earning him national honours, including the Order of Canada.
The RWB, Canada’s oldest ballet company, will continue to build upon Lewis’ legacy, fostering artistic innovation and inspiring audiences worldwide.
