The first part of the hit TV series depicting the life of Jesus, The Chosen, season 5, did very well at the box office over the weekend.

The creators of The Chosen have broken down the fifth season into three parts of "The Last Supper" and released part one in theatres across North America this past weekend. Over three days, the movie brought in a record-breaking $11.5 million.

Part one of "The Last Supper" covers the first two episodes of the brand new season that showcases Holy Week, the week leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth.

After it's opening weekend, The Chosen's The Last Supper part one came in third in the box office. In second place was "A Working Man," an action movie starring Jason Statham. In first place, doing much worse than its produced expected was the retelling of Disney's live-action "Snow White."

The second part will hit theatres starting April 4, and season five's third and final portion will be shown on April 11, leading up to Easter.

"Can I still follow and trust, even when I don’t understand?" Director Dallas Jenkins said in an interview. "The disciples were facing that in season five in Holy Week, and now we face it."

Filming for season six of The Chosen has started already, which will include the climax of Jesus' time on earth depicted in the Bible; His crucifixion and resurrection. The actor who portrays Jesus Christ, Jonathan Roumie, shared an encouragement to people over the weekend.

"Help us send a message to the industry that you want more films and series like ours!" says Roumie on Facebook. "THANK YOU to everyone who’s gone to the theater to see it already!!"

Leading into Easter weekend this year, Roumie has also been a voice on the Hallow App during the Lent season, sharing powerful reflections and prayers on The Way and A Song for Nagasaki during the week.
