Fans of Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ are pleased to hear that after more than two decades, a sequel is set to begin filming this summer.

According to Variety, the new movie The Resurrection of the Christ will be filmed by Cinecittà Studios in Rome starting this August.

The Passion of Christ was released in 2004 and was the largest-grossing independent film of all time, and critics believe this next film will do just as well.

"I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be entirely shot in Cinecittà starting from August and requires many theaters and stage constructions," said Manuela Cacciamani in an interview with Il Sole 24.

It's believed that Jim Caviezel will once again take on the role of Jesus.

The Passion of Christ earned an amazing $370.8 million at the box office when it first hit theatres.
