Despite visible snow on the ground, and potential flurries in the forecast, a Steinbach resident has declared mowing season officially underway.

This afternoon, Willy Froese brought out his mower and began trimming the exposed patches of grass in his yard.

Though many might say it’s a little bit early in the season, Froese has a simple answer.

“I like cutting grass and I can't wait till the snow's gone.”

Froese is also often seen picking up garbage around his property.

“I see a lot of garbage on our yard because from over the winter collecting, and I like to have my yard clean. So that's why, as soon as I can get on it, I want to clean.”

While the yard is only partially mowable due to snow drifts, that hasn’t stopped Froese from getting to work, and he focuses on what’s visible.

“Well, I see where snow's gone, there's lots of garbage, then all the grass, and then from the pine tree. So, I don't like that stuff on my yard. When the grass wants to grow, I want to make sure there’s room.”

This isn’t the first time Froese has gotten a jump on the season. His first mow in 2019 was on April 10 and April 5 last year. But this year, Froese beat his record.

“I did it two weeks ago already.”

While Froese takes pride in maintaining his own yard, he also lends a helping hand and maintains the lawn for his neighbours.

“Both of my neighbors, they are retired people, and they asked me to do their lawn. So, I said yes.”
