Saskatchewan author and former restauranteur dee Hobsbawn-Smith will be at Humboldt’s Reid Thompson Library on Thursday evening for a presentation as part of the Saskatchewan Library Association’s One Book One Province Initiative.
The book in focus is Hobsbawn-Smith's “Bread and Water: Essays.” The collection goes beyond a singular examination of the two staples. It works as a metaphor for a much deeper exploration – one that encompasses human desire and craving. The book weaves the seemingly disparate themes of flood and place, grief and loss, the commonalities of refugees and settled Canadians through food, among others.
She’s served as Saskatchewan’s 10th Poet Laureate, as Saskatoon Public Library’s 35th Writer in Residence, as a mentor and editor, and as leader of Slow Food Calgary and thenOn Slow Food Saskatoon. Called an educator “blessed with whimsy and precision,” she has taught thousands of adults and kids to cook.
One Book One Province was introduced in 2017 to give the province’s residence an opportunity to engage around the ideas of a single book. Like a province wide book club, the 2025 events will be shared by libraries and patrons in Saskatoon, Regina, La Ronge, Rosetown and North Battleford.
The evening gets under way on April 10 at 7 pm at the Reid Thompson Library. The event is open to all and free to attend.
