Morden’s 2025 graduates are counting down the days to their big celebration — and local parents are working hard behind the scenes to make it a night to remember. For the first time ever, the Morden Safe Grad Committee has launched a 50/50 online raffle, giving the community a fun way to support the cause and a chance to win big.
The raffle is open now at fundingchange.ca, with the draw happening April 30 at 2:00 PM.
Why safe grad matters
Safe Grad is a parent-organized celebration held after the official graduation ceremony on June 25. It gives students a chance to enjoy a fun, safe night with their entire class before everyone heads off on new adventures.
“It’s about giving these kids a proper send-off,” said Shelly Plett, chair of the Safe Grad Committee. “They’ve worked hard to get to this point, and Safe Grad is one last chance for them to be together and make memories they’ll carry for life.”
Fellow committee member Shawna Lumgair agreed. “They’re not getting a banquet this year, so we’re putting everything into Safe Grad,” she said. “We want to make it big, exciting, and safe. That’s the goal.”
Shelly added, “When we look back, our own grads were some of our best memories. We want that for our kids too — and we’re going all out to make it special.”
A country fair theme
This year’s celebration will feature a country fair theme, chosen by the graduates themselves. Think cotton candy, BBQ, mini donuts, fair games, fireworks, and even a henna station.
“There’ll be dancing, DJs, photo booths, prizes — just a really good time,” said Lumgair. “And yes, lots of food! That part’s important.”
The Grads speak up
Two grads, Rory Lumgair and Addy Siler, are especially grateful for the support.
“It’s exciting and scary,” said Lumgair, who’s headed to the University of Lethbridge to study psychology and play ball. “But Safe Grad gives us one last night to be together as a class — that means a lot.”
Addy Siler, who plans to study biology at the University of Manitoba, added, “It’s a way to celebrate all the friendships and memories from high school before everyone goes their separate ways. It’s a big deal.”
When asked why people should buy a ticket, Siler smiled. “You get to support a good cause, and you might even win some money. It’s a win-win.”
Rory added one more thought: “The support from our town makes it feel like people are cheering us on — and that really means something.”
Buy your tickets today
To help fund this ambitious celebration, the Safe Grad Committee launched a 50/50 raffle through Funding Change — something they’ve never tried before.
“We’ve seen other communities have a lot of success with it, so we thought, let’s give it a shot,” said Plett. “It’s simple — buy a ticket, support our grads, and you might win half the pot. Why not?”
If you want to support local grads and have a shot at winning some cash, now’s your chance. The 50/50 draw runs until April 30.
