The sounds of laughter, music, and Plautdietsch (Low German) are returning to the historic village of Neubergthal as part of the Plautdietsche Tietfedrief 2025 (Low German Programs 2025).
On Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 PM, the Commons Barn will host the second installment of “Komm Trijg Nom Darp!”, which translates to “Come Back to the Village!” The program features music and sketches from the hilarious and much-loved duo of Tina Fehr-Kehler and Angela Klassen.
The pair will bring their iconic characters, Mitch and Zeus, to life on stage. These fan-favourite personas offer a humorous and heartfelt look at Mennonite village life—often with a twist of satire and plenty of Plautdietsch flair.
“Life is hard—Why not laugh?”
“It’s a funny language—it just sounds like what it means,” says Fehr-Kehler. “Life is hard, so why not laugh about it?”
The program includes original sketches, comedic musical numbers—including a Plautdietsch parody of Adele’s Hello—and maybe even a singalong or two. Whether you're fluent in Low German or just along for the ride, the show promises a welcoming atmosphere filled with joy, tradition, and plenty of humor.
A taste of tradition
As part of the experience, attendees will also enjoy faspa—a traditional Mennonite light meal—included with admission. Expect fresh buns, cheese, preserves, pickles, and warm hospitality served up in a setting that celebrates the heritage of the Plautdietsch-speaking community.
A historic venue
The Commons Barn in Neubergthal offers a one-of-a-kind backdrop. This nationally designated historic site is part of Canada’s best-preserved Mennonite street village and adds authenticity and charm to the event.
“Even if Mennonite history isn’t your own, it’s a fascinating place to visit,” Fehr-Kehler notes. “Go there and experience it—it’s like stepping back in time.”
Open to all
While the program is delivered in Low German, newcomers are always welcome.
“We do a little interpreting if needed,” Fehr-Kehler adds. “It’s a great way to introduce other cultures to ours.”
