A local athlete with the Portage Stampeders team is gearing up to represent his community on the provincial stage this summer, and he's bringing his infectious smile and energy with him.

Caleb Reykdal, a Special Olympics athlete from Portage la Prairie, shared his excitement for the upcoming Manitoba Summer Games in Winnipeg.

"I'm doing running and shot put," Caleb said proudly.

Caleb, who also enjoys baseball, and golf is one of six athletes from the Portage Stampeders team set to compete in the provincial games in June.

Calebs Aunt and head Coach Deanna Talbot, said the team is made up of a diverse group of athletes, ranging in age from toddlers to adults in their 30s.

"This summer we have six athletes competing,” she said. “We're really excited to have them representing our community."

The roster includes Caleb Reykdal, Dylan Wilson, Stephanie Holmes, Sarah Holmes, Katie Niles, and Paula Jordan.

Talbot said, every athlete landed on the podium during a recent qualifying event in Winnipeg — a great start to the season.

To help fund the trip, the team is launching a "Draft an Athlete" fundraiser.

"Each athlete needs to raise $250, which covers things like registration, accommodations, transportation, and meals," Talbot explained. "Our goal is to raise at least $1,500 locally."

Community members and businesses can contribute to the Portage team, by reaching out to Talbot directly to ensure funds benefit the local athletes.

"We're hoping to raise a little extra too, so we can throw a pep rally before the games, and I'll have more information on that coming soon."

As for Caleb, he's just thrilled to be part of it all — and even more excited to wave to his family in the stands. He said his favourite part of the track meet in qualifying was,

"I saw my family and blew them kisses," he said with a big smile. "Hi, Mom and Dad!"

With athletes like Caleb leading the way, the Portage Stampeders are ready to make their mark at the Manitoba Summer Games this June.
