The Kenmor Theatre is about to transform into a world of giants, dragons, and daring adventures, as Steinbach’s own Looking Glass Theatre returns to Morden for a one-night-only performance of The Pilgrim’s Progress on Saturday, April 26th.

The professional theater company, led by Marc Moir and Laura Kathleen Turner, is no stranger to Morden audiences — and they can't wait to be back.

"We love coming to Morden. It's our happy place," said Moir. "It's a great town. We love it."

A classic tale, brought to life like never before

The Pilgrim’s Progress is based on one of the most famous books in history — second only to the Bible in number of copies printed. It’s a sweeping Christian allegory written by John Bunyan, following a character named Christian on his journey to the Celestial City.

"It's just this wonderful adventure story," said Moir. "If you like books like Lord of the Rings or Narnia, the show is absolutely in your wheelhouse."

The production promises something for everyone — sword fights, giants, poignant moments, and hilarious character transformations. "It quite literally has something for everybody," added Moir. "It's a load of fun and pure theater."

Four actors, 70 characters — Pure theatrical magic

One of the most mind-blowing aspects of The Pilgrim’s Progress is that just four actors bring more than 70 characters to life on stage. Turner herself plays an astonishing 40 different roles.

"We all get a night where we just take our imaginations out for a workout," Turner said. "It is so much fun. Audiences in Steinbach just went bananas for it!"

And it’s not just about costume changes. "There’s hardly any costume changes in the show," Turner explained. "You just watch as we change our physicality and listen as we change our voice. It’s pure theater."

Fans of creativity and theatrical storytelling are in for a treat. "We love the idea that we might be the first play someone ever sees," said Turner. "And we really love to spark people's imaginations — especially the kids."

A special night for families, church groups, and theater lovers

Falling just after Easter, this performance offers the perfect night out for families, youth groups, and anyone who loves a good adventure story.
"Especially since we're coming the weekend after Easter, it falls at a really good time for those groups to come," Turner shared.

In fact, the excitement from previous audiences has been contagious. Some families even returned to see the show two or three times.

"Kids have loved it, which has been wonderful," said Moir. "My five- and six-year-olds were absolutely captivated by it."

A bittersweet finale to season one

Looking Glass Theatre’s stop in Morden also marks the final show of their first full season as a professional theater company in Southeastern Manitoba. "This will be us turning off the lights on Season 1 and starting the process on Season 2," said Moir. "If you want to see Looking Glass Theatre this season, this is your last chance."

And for Moir, the journey has been deeply personal. "I've been working on adapting this book for like 20 years, and to finally see it on stage with this cast is so special," he said. "I think audiences are going to agree that it's a really special show."
