The internationally renowned African Children's Choir is coming to perform in Portage la Prairie on Sunday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Prairie Alliance Church. The event promises an evening of joy, cultural celebration, and powerful purpose.

Janelle Hoekstra, a grade four teacher at West Park School, has a special connection to the choir. Between 2016 and 2020, she toured with the group in various roles — including product manager, tour leader, and educator.

"I traveled with the choir across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. We were responsible for the kids' safety, education, and making sure concerts ran smoothly. It was a life-changing experience for me."

The African Children's Choir was founded in 1984 by Ray Barnett during a relief mission in Uganda, Africa. Inspired by the resilience and joy of a young boy he met, Barnett launched the choir to highlight the potential and spirit of African youth.

"The goal is breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Once the kids return home, their education is paid for all the way through post-secondary school," explained Hoekstra.

Sunday's concert will blend traditional African and Christian music, featuring lively drumming, dancing, and singing. Admission is completely free, with a free-will offering collected to support the choir's education fund — not just for the touring children, but also for others back in Uganda.

"You won't leave without a smile on your face. It's an hour that will change your perspective."

For Hoekstra, her time with the choir continues to shape her worldview.

"They found joy in the simplest things. It reminded me to slow down and appreciate what we often overlook. This is a concert you don't want to miss."
