The city of Winnipeg is gearing up for their curbside giveaway weekend and a compost giveaway, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.
"We are committed to doing our part by helping residents keep more things out of the landfill," said City Councillor Ross Eadie, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Water, Waste and the Environment. "Any resident that participates in our yard waste collection service, Giveaway Weekend or picking up compost from the Compost Giveaway are helping to reduce the impacts of climate change in our city."
On May 10 and 11, residents of Winnipeg are encouraged to put their unwanted and still usable items at the curb in front of their house. People are encouraged to put up a sign or label each item with a sticker that says 'Free,' so that there is no confusion.
While most household items can be good for another to reuse, the city is reminding people that the following are not appropriate to leave on the curb during the giveaway. This includes:
- Items that could be unsafe
- Items infested with bed bugs (e.g., mattresses, furniture, and bedding)
- Toilets (with a flush volume of 13 litres or more)
Compost
Using the grass clippings, leaves, and twigs from residents' spring clean-up, the city has created compost that people can pick up for free May 9, 10, and 11 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The compost will be available at 1901 Brady Rd. (next to Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot), Kilcona Dog Park, west parking lot off McIvor Avenue (line up on Norris Road, south of McIvor Avenue), and Summit Road closed landfill site, Summit Road north of Optimist Park.
The free compost is only available to residents of Winnipeg. People interested will need to bring their own gloves, shovel, and containers to store the compost in. There is a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle.
