If you’ve seen people around Portage la Prairie and the Central Plains dumping buckets of ice water over their heads lately, you’re not imagining things. The Ice Bucket Challenge is back, 11 years after it first went viral in 2014.
The challenge was originally created to raise awareness and funds for ALS and the phenomenon swept across the world with celebrities, athletes, and everyday folks getting soaked for a good cause.
The challenge was recently revived, but this time by students at the University of South Carolina’s Mental Illness Needs Discussion club and is centered around mental heath. The idea is similar to 2014.
- Grab a bucket, some ice, and a friend
- Record your challenge and tag three others to take it next
- Post on social media and tag @uscmind and @active_minds to be featured
- Include the donation link to support the work of Active Minds
Participants in the challenge can be found on many social media sites and some of the people participating weren't even alive in 2014. Videos of the icy moments have flooded social media feeds in Portage and with the "challenge three more people" aspect, it hasn't taken long for hundreds of videos to show up.
With temperatures finally warming up in southern Manitoba, the timing couldn’t be better for a little cold water and a little bit of fun.
