On May 8th, McDonald’s restaurants in Morden and Winkler were buzzing with excitement and generosity as the community came together for McHappy Day, an annual event where a portion of proceeds from every food and beverage item sold is donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and other local children’s organizations.
A day where every bite gives back
For locals grabbing breakfast, lunch, dinner — or just their regular coffee — the impact of their order reached far beyond the counter. This year’s McHappy Day once again raised critical funds for RMHC Manitoba, which provides a home-away-from-home for families whose children require medical treatment in Winnipeg.
“We’ve seen first-hand how many people from our community rely on Ronald McDonald House,” said Avi Sandhu, Owner/Operator of McDonald’s in Morden and Winkler. “It may be in Winnipeg, but it’s really a rural resource. Families from Morden, Winkler, and all around the Pembina Valley are using it all the time.”
Unlike in past years where only select items contributed to the cause, now every menu item helps — from Big Macs to McCafé lattes.
“We wanted to make it as accessible and impactful as possible,” Sandhu added. “Not everyone eats the same things, so opening it up means more people can help.”
Local stories, real impact
For Tina, a McDonald’s crew trainer in Morden, supporting McHappy Day isn’t just about giving back — it’s personal.
“I used Ronald McDonald House about four years ago when my daughter needed surgery in Winnipeg,” she shared. “The staff were amazing, the room was ready for me, and I could have breakfast before heading back to the hospital. It meant so much during such a stressful time.”
What would have cost hundreds — or even thousands — in hotel stays was instead provided at no cost thanks to the donations that fund RMHC.
Leadership that cares
Morden Mayor Nancy Penner also lent a hand behind the counter and helped spread the message.
“You never know when you or someone close to you will need a place to stay in Winnipeg,” Penner said. “Being near your loved one while they’re sick is so important — and Ronald McDonald House makes that possible without adding financial stress.”
Even a simple cup of coffee — which Mayor Penner prefers black — made a difference.
The community’s generosity continues to shine each year.
We are still waiting or the total amount raided from McHappy Day, in support of RMHC and local children’s charities.
