The classic two finger wave (Photo by Nick Cooper)

Living in Saskatchewan, you've either been on the receiving end — or you've given — a wave to every passing car.

For those unfamiliar with the gesture, I asked the all-knowing internet to break down the meaning behind this simple but powerful action.

Purpose Behind the Farmer's Wave:

  1. Community Acknowledgment: It’s a way to recognize fellow community members, showing that you see and respect them.

  2. Politeness and Hospitality: Reflects the friendliness and hospitality commonly found in rural areas.

  3. Cultural Tradition: It's part of rural social norms — people in smaller communities often feel a stronger sense of connectedness.

  4. Nonverbal Communication: A quick way to communicate goodwill, familiarity, or gratitude without needing to stop or speak.

  5. Safety Courtesy: On narrow or rough roads, the wave can also acknowledge another driver’s effort in navigating safely past you.

So, what’s your wave? Or tell us why you don’t do it!
